Contribution of the Handloom Sector in the Economy

The Handloom Industry occupies a unique place in our country’s economy. It comes earliest in existence so it adds to the 14% of total production and 30% to the Total Exports. This Sector contributes to the Employment also after Agriculture and is at the Second largest Employment Generator.

It provides direct employment to over 65 Lacs persons engaged in weaving and allied activities.  Due to Government intervention through Financial Assistance and Implementation of various Developmental and Welfare Schemes, this sector has been able to cope up with the competition from the Power Loom and Mill Sectors. Cloth Production has nearly 19% contribution in the country also it adds to the earnings of Exports. The handloom sector always contributes to innovations which makes it a Heritage of India which exemplifies richness, diversity, and artistry of our Culture and our Weavers.
